Celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Okinawan Immigration to Canada
Join us for a spectacular cultural celebration marking the 125th anniversary of Okinawan immigration to Canada! This special event features REQUIOS, the acclaimed creative performing arts troupe from Okinawa, known for their dynamic and innovative stage interpretations of traditional Okinawan arts, including Eisa Taiko (drum dancing)
and the mesmerizing Shishimai (Lion Dance).
The name Requios originates from a term used by Portuguese explorers during the Ryukyu Kingdom’s era of maritime trade. They referred to the Ryukyuan people as Requios—meaning friendly, unarmed, and peace-loving—a spirit that continues to
define Okinawan culture today.
