The Legend of the Purple Hairpin is written by Tong Dik Sang, a famous Cantonese opera dramatist. The Legend of the Purple Hairpin eulogizes the theme of love and devotion.

Li Yi, a talented scholar who promised to marry Princess Huo’s daughter, Huo Xiaoyu, with a purple jade hairpin. He became the top scholar in the imperial exam, but Prime Minister Lu wanted him as a son-in-law. Li Yi refused, and Prime Minister Lu tried to sabotage him. Huo Xiaoyu thought he broke his promise and became poor and sick, selling the hairpin. With the help of a chivalrous man in a yellow costume, they were reunited and the “sword and hairpin” were reunited.

紫钗记是在1956年唐滌生根據明代湯顯祖原著崑劇改編的粵劇演。

唐代才子李益許下以紫玉釵向已故霍王小女霍小玉求婚。後來，李益成為狀元，但權臣盧太尉想要他成為女婿。李益拒絕了，盧太尉便設法損害他。霍小玉誤以為他背棄承諾，變得貧病交加，賣掉了釵。最後，在黃衫客的幫助下，他們得以重逢，「劍合釵圓」的美好結局。
